CSC Athlete Code of Conduct

The purpose of a code of conduct for athletes is to establish a consistent expectation for athletes’ behavior. By signing this code of conduct, I agree to the following statements:

COMPORTMENT: I will represent CSC with integrity and respect at all times, both on and off the pool deck. This includes personal interactions, social media, other electronic communication, and during media interviews. This applies at official CSC activities, practices, meets, or on my own time. Bullying or disrespectful behavior of any kind will not be tolerated.

PREPARATION: I will be on time and prepared at my assigned practice time. This includes having the required gear for both wet and dry practices. I understand the team’s late policy that if I arrive later than 15 minutes after practice begins, I will not be allowed to participate in dryland or enter the water. I understand coaches are not responsible for entertaining swimmers who arrive late.

You are late if you are not in the water at the start of practice. If you are not in the water and swimming within 15 minutes after your practice start time, you will be allowed to practice and will be excused from the pool deck.

UNIFORM: I will adhere to CSC policy and wear CSC caps at practices held Monday through Thursday. As an ARENA-sponsored team, I will do my best to wear ARENA practice suits. I will wear only the officially designated Team Cap and Suit at meets. At championship meets or other prelim/final meets, I may wear a high-performance suit with the Team Cap. When applicable, team gear (shirt, warmups, etc.) should be worn at meets.

SPORTSMANSHIP: I will uphold the highest standards of sportsmanship at all practices and meets. I will handle victory and defeat with grace and respect for my opponents, teammates, and, most importantly, myself.

❏ I will support and cheer on my teammates at every opportunity.

❏ I will set a good example of behavior and work ethic for my younger teammates.

❏ I will be respectful of my teammates’ feelings and personal space. Swimmers who exhibit sexist, racist, homophobic, or otherwise inappropriate behavior will be faced with consequences.

LANGUAGE: I will use positive language to communicate with others. I will refrain from profanity, vulgarity, and innuendo during practices, meets, or in public.

I will abstain from negative self-talk, talk about self-harm, talk about harming others, harming others, or encouraging harm to others.

RESPECT IN COMMUNICATION & ACTION: I will respect and show courtesy to my teammates and coaches at all times. I will obey all of USA Swimming’s rules and codes of conduct. I have reviewed and understand CSC’s Social Media and Electronic Communications Policy and the Action Plan for Bullying. CSC members will not engage in such behaviors at team events, activities, on social media, or in school. Disrespectful behaviors include but are not limited to,

  • Fighting or intentionally causing physical harm to another person,
  • Threatening or inciting violence to another person,
  • Bullying, demeaning, belittling, intimidating, tormenting, or otherwise intentionally causing emotional harm to another person,
  • Using graphic gestures or language or electronically sending such, including pornography, flashing, mooning, or other sexually harassing behaviors,
  • Inappropriately touching another person
  • Spreading rumors or gossip that could damage another person’s reputation.

If I engage in such activities, I understand that I will be removed from practice and subject to CSC’s Disciplinary Procedures.

USE OF HAMFUL SUBSTANCES: I will abstain from the use of alcohol, tobacco, illicit and illegal drugs, the misuse of prescribed pharmaceuticals, or other substances banned by USA Swimming.

RESPECTING AUTHORITY: I will follow the direction of CSC coaches, chaperones, officials, or volunteers. Disrespect or the failure to obey directions will not be tolerated. If I disagree with an official’s call, I will talk with my coach and not approach the official directly.

RESPECTING PROPERTY: As a CSC Team Member, I will respect all facilities and other property (including locker rooms) used during practices, competitions, and team activities. I will also clean up my garbage on the decks at practice and meets.

ATTENDING MEETS: Meets are a vital part of being on a team, and I must, at minimum, attend all TEAM meets. I understand there will be approximately one meet per month available,

❏ I will be on time for meet warmups. I am responsible for having my suit, cap, goggles and other equipment needed for the meet. I will stay until the conclusion of each session. If I must leave early, I will communicate with CSC coaches PRIOR to leaving the meet. If I do not do so and a fine is assessed by the meet host for failure to scratch an event, I will be responsible for paying said fine.

❏  At meets, I am responsible for getting to my events early enough to prepare for racing.
